Back in December 2015, I had the opportunity to participate in the Data Vault 2.0 Certification Training in Stockholm. It was an intensive and rewarding program that combined self-paced online learning with a hands-on, team-based classroom experience.

Structure of the Training

The training was designed in two parts:

  • Online preparation: Two weeks before the classroom sessions began, participants received access to online, on-demand lessons. These materials provided a 24/7 refresher on Data Vault concepts and ensured everyone arrived with a solid working knowledge.
  • Classroom sessions: The three-day classroom portion started with a structured Data Vault Review, followed by a case-study workshop where teams were assigned different pieces of a Data Vault model to design. This practical work included analyzing business questions, documenting assumptions, and drawing the model. At the end, each team presented its findings to the group.

The training concluded with exam preparation and the official Data Vault 2.0 Certification Test, a two-and-a-half-hour written assessment focusing on ideas and concepts.

Audience

The training brought together a diverse group of professionals including data modelers, architects, BI analysts, ETL designers, project managers, and business sponsors. This variety enriched the discussions and case studies, reflecting the many perspectives involved in real-world data projects.

Delivery

The format was a mix of lectures, presentations, discussions, labs, and exercises. The hands-on lab work with case studies was particularly valuable, providing practical experience in applying Data Vault principles to real business challenges.

My Takeaway

For me, the Stockholm class was more than just a certification— it was an opportunity to deepen my understanding of Data Vault 2.0, collaborate with peers across different roles, and validate my skills through a rigorous assessment.

It marked an important milestone in my professional journey as a data modeler and architect.
